Sonification for Communication
Sounds used in sonfication, i.e. mapping of data characteristics to sound parameters, are well adapted to convey a multitude of information to listeners quickly and intuitively, communicate meaning, information, and emotions without adding visual clutter or loading on the visual modality. Sound can also be perceived peripherally while an indivisual's attention is focuesed on something else. This suggests that the use of sonification can be beneficial for communication.
The work within the project has so far explored:
- The use of an multimodal interactive art installation.
- The modal synergy effect when sonification and visual stimuli are combined.
- The experiential qualities of sonic atmosphere and performativity as important aspects of sonification in public spaces.
While these following areas are currently under planning and/or investigation:
- Sonification enhance experience of visual stimuli.
- Sonification as a mean to communicate peripherally in public spaces.
